Physical therapy not only rehabilitates post-surgical back and neck patients, but can actually help avoid undergoing invasive procedures. If surgery is required, attending PT first can help strengthen musculature, possibly shortening recovery time.
Our physical therapists treat acute and chronic injuries. Whether your injury has just occurred or has been nagging you for several years, we are trained to evaluate, diagnose, and create an appropriate treatment plan for your condition. Your plan of care is always customized to fit each individual patients' needs, always considering your functional limitations.
Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, myalgia, arthralgia- All are painful conditions which can lead to progressive deformity, dysfunction, and lack of functional mobility. Therapeutic exercise can help alleviate the symptoms of all types of arthritis. Osteopenia and osteoporosis are also conditions that can benefit from therapeutic exercise. Your PT will customize an exercise plan for you that is geared towards building bone density and strengthening muscles to reduce the risk of fractures.

PRE & POST SURGERY CARE
Physical therapists are often the first line of defense in surgical prevention. Over the years, we have helped many people avoid the risks, pain, and costs associated with surgical interventions.
Of course there are instances when surgery is the appropriate course of action; Physical Therapy Associates of Smithtown provides Pre-Surgical strengthening, conditioning, neuromuscular training and patient education to assist you with your recovery.
Post-operatively, physical therapists assist you in restoring your highest level of function; including activities of daily living (ADL's) and even recreational activities. Whether your goals are simply to walk without pain or return to your sport, Physical Therapy Associates of Smithtown can help.
We have extensive experience with all surgical procedures including arthroscopies, rotator cuff and tendon repairs, tenodesis, meniscal repairs, ACL/PCL repairs, arthritic debridements, surgical fusions (spinal fusion or joint fusion), disc replacements, laminectomies and total joint replacements.
Examples of neurological disorders and diseases commonly treated are: Parkinson's disease, strokes (TIA/CVA), multiple sclerosis, dystonia, cerebral palsy, neuropathy, parasthesias and cerebellar diseases.
Radicular pain (pain radiating along a dermatome or sensory nerve due to inflammation or irritation of that nerve root), such as "sciatica", is also a common ailment that physical therapy can often remedy. It is important to recieve treatment for these types of issues soon after they occur to avoid compensatory strategies and worsening symptoms- issues like these could become chronic and take much longer to rehab if not addressed.
As physical therapists, we specialize in helping people to function safely and independently. This includes using special tests and measures to test balance and coordination to determine if you are at risk for a fall. During your evaluation, we also assess the need for assistive devices such as rolling walkers or canes, which may provide additional support for a patient who feels unsteady standing or walking.
Sprains and strains (for example: ligament sprains, muscular strains, whiplash)
Tendonitis and bursitis (for example: tennis and golfer's elbow/epicondylitis, rotator cuff tendonitis, trochanteric bursitis). This can also include overuse injuries or repetitive stress injuries (for example: carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, pronator teres syndrome, pectoral minor syndrome).
Tendon, muscle and ligament tears (for example: ACL, PCL, MCL knee injuries, bicep tears)
Sports related injuries of all types.
Patient education is of utmost importance to us at Physical Therapy Associates of Smithtown. We will help you understand your condition, how it started, how to correct it, and how to prevent it in the future. We love treating you, but we don't want to see you come back for the same issue over and over again! Starting your first visit, at your evaluation, you will receive a written home exercise program catered to you specifically; including detailed descriptions of any exercises and/or stretches that your physical therapist has prescribed for you.
